Probable Final Vote on Property Tax Changes

Tomorrow, June 14th, at 10AM is City Council’s second-to-last session before the summer recess.

We are informed it is likely that Council will consider several property tax bills, some overlapping, some competing – and vote on one or more of them.

Major issues to be decided:

– Whether to enact the new “Actual Value Initiative” (AVI), or to delay it by one year.

– Whether to include “Gentrification Caps” on new home assessments, limiting how much people can be taxed when their home value increases by more than 200%.

– How much extra funding to provide to the School District (options range from $40M to $94M).

If you are concerned about these issues, and your schedule permits, head down to City Hall, 4th Floor, Room 400, and testify at Council. These issues are up in the air – Council appears to be evenly divided and/or uncertain on them, and public testimony might have a decisive impact.
